The Ultimate Guide to Liyang, China
A little background….
Liyang is a hidden gem in China since most tourists gravitate toward popular cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an. Those are fine if you’re looking for an experience filled with history, culture and never ending things to see and do. Liyang, on the other hand, is the absolute opposite of all these things. With hot springs to soak in and nature to get lost in, one will wonder why this city isn’t more popular among tourists.
WHAT TO DO
nanshan bamboo sea
This adventure starts by taking either the ground car or the cable car up to Nanshan Bamboo Sea. Here, you will find yourself in the mountains surrounded by lush green forests and stunning views of the lake. There are plenty of activities to stay entertained including a bird show, bamboo museum and bamboo rafting on the lake.
TICKET PRICE: ¥ 200 (this includes the cost of the ground car)
panda exhibition
At the top of the mountain you will find the Panda Exhibition where two pandas currently reside. The exhibition is panda friendly and gives them plenty of space to roam indoors and outdoors. Since the exhibition is included in the ticket price for Nanshan Bamboo Sea, you will not have to pay extra.
yu shui hot springs resort
It is no surprise that the Yu Shui Hot Springs is my favorite part of Liyang. I learned that there are over 100 types of hot springs to choose from including coffee, mint, green tea, and beer. Each hot spring has its share of health benefits.
There are also neat options within the spring such as the sand bath where you lay underneath small rocks for 20 minutes, and the fish spa where tiny fish eat the dead skin off your feet. Each option costs a mere 25 yuan. I have experienced and enjoyed both!

rainbow road
I love this road for the simple fact that it is unique. If you are anything like me, you probably know how to appreciate a good Instagram photo. There is no need to look for the road because you will see it the moment you drive into Liyang, and the road continues for miles in different directions.
tianmu lake
About a 25 minute drive away from Yu Shui Hot Springs is Tianmu Lake. It's a picturesque area with water, mountains and plenty of hiking spots. Near the lake are several tasty seafood restaurants. I recommend the grilled fish with white rice. Also near the lake is the option to ride a hot air balloon. I personally skipped this option so I do not know the price.
